\"VarietyLogo1\"<\/a>Gunpowder & Sky has acquired rights to horror-comedy \u201cTragedy Girls,\u201d starring Alexandra Shipp and Brianna Hildebrand, for release to theaters later this year.<\/p>\n

The film, which debuted at SXSW, follows two death-obsessed teens played by Shipp (\u201cX-Men: Apocalypse\u201d) and Brianna Hildebrand (\u201cDeadpool\u201d) who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small midwestern town into frenzy and cement their legacy as modern horror legends.<\/p>\n

\u201cTragedy Girls\u201d was directed by Tyler MacIntyre, who also co-wrote the script with Chris Lee Hill. It\u2019s MacIntyre\u2019s second feature. His debut film \u201cPatchwork\u201d won Best Picture at Screamfest in 2015.<\/p>\n

The film is produced by the Comeback Kids and New Artist Pictures, in association with Ardor Pictures. It is executive produced by Kerry Rhodes.<\/p>\n

Variety\u2018s Andrew Barker said in his SXSW review, \u201cTyler MacIntyre\u2019s \u2018Tragedy Girls\u2019 serves as a welcome tonic, and one of the freshest, funniest horror-comedies to emerge in \u2018Scream\u2019s\u2019 long wake.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter seeing how well audiences were connecting with the film at South by Southwest, we knew we needed to find a distribution partner that shared our passion for the theatrical experience,\u201d said MacIntyre. \u201cWe\u2019ve been extremely impressed with Gunpowder & Sky and the team\u2019s innovative approach so we are thrilled to be working with a company that is as excited as we are to finally unleash this movie onto the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Tragedy Girls\u2019 is a wild, meta horror comedy with some of the most badass female teens we\u2019ve seen on the screen,\u201d said Jake Hanly of Gunpowder & Sky. \u201cTyler MacIntyre has established himself as a horror director to watch, someone who\u2019s steeped in the history of the genre while bringing a fresh and authentic take. We\u2019re thrilled to take audiences on this ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

The deal was brokered by Hanly and CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.<\/p>\n

Gunpowder & Sky has recently released or launched projects including Spotify\u2019s \u201cDrawn & Recorded\u201d; the Herbalife documentary, \u201cBetting on Zero\u201d; and Ben Young\u2019s \u201cHounds of Love,\u201d which recently won the Overlook Film Festival\u2019s Jury and Audience Awards for Best Feature.<\/p>\n
