A dramatic thriller starring Oscar nominee\u00a0Maria Bakalova<\/a>\u00a0has sold to\u00a0Level 33<\/a>\u00a0Entertainment for domestic theatrical release.<\/p>\n The sales and distribution entity will take \u201cElectra\u201d out day and date on May 2. The film marks the directorial debut of Hala Matar, an influential filmmaker in the worlds of high fashion and music videos. Matar is also credited as the first Bahraini woman in history to complete a feature film.<\/p>\n \u201cElectra\u201d is described as a potboiler in the vein of \u201cThe Talented Mr. Ripley\u201d and \u201cSaltburn.\u201d Bakalova stars with Abigail Cowen (Netflix\u2019s \u201cFate: the Winx Saga\u201d) and Jack Farthing (\u201cSpencer,\u201d \u201cRain Dogs\u201d). Daryl Wein, a producer and script co-writer on the project, also co-stars.<\/p>\n Packaged and shot in Italy, \u201cElectra\u201d follows two journalists who travel to the lush Italian villa of a famous musician and his partner for an interview, but all is not as it seems and the trip spirals into deceit and deadly betrayals.<\/p>\n Andreas Olavarria, president and CEO at Level 33, described the film as a \u201cfun, fresh cinematic experience from a bold and original new voice in filmmaking. We are thrilled to bring this vibrant, entertaining film to audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n Matar\u2019s resume includes buzzy work for Moncler, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. The director said her debut film aims to \u201cexplore the dangers of leaving wounds unhealed and the masks we wear to belong \u2014 how avoiding the hard work of self-confrontation only deepens the fracture.\u201d She and Paul Sado are also credited screenwriters.<\/p>\n Additional producers include Matar, Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Productions, Tommaso Bertani of Ring Film and Luca Cottafavi.
