Richard Gere Goes Back in Time \u2014 and Transforms Into Jacob Elordi \u2014 in First Look at Paul Schrader\u2019s \u2018Oh, Canada\u2019: <\/h1>\n

Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi star in Paul Schrader\u2018s latest, highly anticipated film \u2018Oh, Canada,\u2019 which premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday.<\/p>\n

Based on the late Russell Banks\u2019 2021 novel \u201cForegone,\u201d the film centers on Gere\u2019s Leonard Fife, an acclaimed filmmaker and \u201cone of 60,000 draft evaders and deserters who fled to Canada to avoid serving in Vietnam\u201d who \u201cshares all his secrets to de-mythologize his mythologized life.\u201d Elordi plays the younger version of Leonard.<\/p>\n

In this first-look clip, Gere\u2019s Leonard speeds up to someone\u2019s home, gets out of a car and walks toward the gate. \u201cAmanda was a jazz pianist,\u201d his voiceover begins. \u201cShe said she was the mistress of Gerry Mulligan, but he was always on the road.\u201d Then, the footage displays the film\u2019s magic trick, as Elordi\u2019s younger Leonard appears, pushing open the home\u2019s gate and peering in the window, while the voiceover continues: \u201cAmy. Amanda. Alicia. All those A\u2019s\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The film, which debuts in Cannes\u2019 official competition lineup, reunites Schrader with his \u201cAmerican Gigolo\u201d star Gere after more than 40 years. In addition to Gere and Elordi (who is hot off breakthrough turns in \u201cSaltburn\u201d and \u201cPriscilla\u201d), the drama also stars Academy Award nominee Uma Thurman and Emmy winner Michael Imperioli. \u201cOh Canada\u201d is produced by David Gonzales alongside Tiffany Boyle, Luisa Law, Scott LaStaiti and Meghan Hanlon.<\/p>\n

While the clip doesn\u2019t reveal much about the film\u2019s plot, Schrader teased the premise to Variety earlier this year. \u201cFife is dying and realizing that his whole life has been built on lies and he is trying to confront himself before he dies,\u201d Schrader said, unpacking the film\u2019s themes further in an extensive profile.<\/p>\n

The character, an enigmatic American, built a career working in nonfiction film, while his entire life was built around a creation myth that is largely bullshit. \u201cAs Fife battles cancer in Montreal during his twilight years, he agrees to one final interview,\u201d a synopsis explains. \u201cIntent on revealing his long-guarded secrets and demystifying his mythologized life, Fife\u2019s shocking confession unfolds amidst the presence of his wife and producing partner, Emma (Thurman), his devoted former student Malcolm MacLeod (Imperioli), and a team of filmmakers capturing this profound moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Arclight Films is handling international sales of the film, while domestic rights are co-represented by WME Independent and David Gonzales.<\/p>\n
