\u2018Oh, Canada\u2019 First Look: Jacob Elordi Is a Draft-Dodging Documentarian in Paul Schrader\u2019s Ode to Russell Banks: <\/h1>\n

Jacob Elordi is swapping eras and countries for Paul Schrader\u2018s \u201cOh, Canada.\u201d In the new feature, the Australian actor portrays Leonard Fife, a Vietnam War draft evader who restarts his life in Canada and becomes a documentarian. Richard Gere plays the older version of Elordi\u2019s character as he reflects on his life while dying of cancer and gives one final interview to share his secret. The feature is an adaptation of late author Russell Banks\u2019 2021 novel \u201cForegone.\u201d Banks and director Schrader previously collaborated on film \u201cAffliction.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Canada\u201d is premiering in competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, marking Schrader\u2019s return to the festival since 1988\u2019s \u201cPatty Hearst.\u201d Schrader recently shared a photo with fellow auteurs Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas, who will also be in attendance at the festival, with Coppola debuting \u201cMegalopolis\u201d and Lucas receiving an honorary Palme d\u2019Or.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, Canada\u201d itself also serves as a reunion of sorts, with Schrader back once more with actor Gere, who starred in his 1980 film \u201cAmerican Gigolo.\u201d Filmmaker Schrader previously told Letterboxd that Robert De Niro was first approached to lead \u201cOh, Canada\u201d before he reached out to Gere.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the kind of top spin of doing the dying gigolo, the emaciated man in the wheelchair, bald and sick, and trying to get his life straight. Now I have to cast a younger version of him,\u201d Schrader said before Elordi came onboard. \u201cSo there\u2019ll be two characters. When you package these kinds of films, you have to keep in mind a little bit of the buzz, what I call the top spin. Bret Easton Ellis said to me the other day, \u2018I was told that you\u2019re doing a remake of \u201cAmerican Gigolo.\u201d\u2018 I said, \u2018I\u2019m not, but if they want to think that and it can help me get money, they can think that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Schrader additionally described the film to IndieWire as about \u201cCanada being a metaphor for death,\u201d he said. \u2018It\u2019s my \u2018Ivan Ilyich.\u2019\u201d The Oscar winner later shared that he is working on a new script about the \u201cpost-dying\u201d process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was sort of saturated with dying at that time,\u201d Schrader said. \u201cI had been to the hospital multiple times during COVID. Friends had been dying; they still are dying. And I thought, well, geez, if you\u2019re going to make a film about dying, you better hurry up. And so I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Schrader added, \u201cI feel like it went quite well, so now I\u2019ll make a post-dying film.\u201d He continued of the currently in-the-works script, \u201cI\u2019m writing something right now. I\u2019m going over it today. \u2026 I\u2019ve written a script about a sexual obsessor. So that\u2019s what I\u2019m doing now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elordi\u2019s \u201cSaltburn\u201d co-star Barry Keoghan is also leading a Cannes feature with Andrea Arnold\u2019s \u201cBird.\u201d <\/p>\n
