This will be the festival\u2019s 40th anniversary with special celebration events for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>Speakers this year include Jesse Eisenberg, Steven Soderbergh, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sue Bird, Dee Rees, Lucy Lawless, Andr\u00e9 Holland, Debra Granik, Jay Ellis and Nzingha Stewart. Additionally, there will be a \u201cNew Frontier: Let\u2019s Rebrand Artificial Intelligence!\u201d conversation about technology and popular culture led by experts in the field.<\/p>\n<p>As part of the lineup, there will be a special screening of the music documentary \u201cThe Greatest Night in Pop,\u201d which spotlights the recording session behind the song \u201cWe Are the World\u201d from Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Cyndi Lauper and many more artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Beyond Film programming is a crucial and inspiring part of the Sundance Film Festival experience,\u201d said Ania Trzebiatowska, Beyond Film program curator. \u201cIt\u2019s during these intimate conversations that audiences can discover themes across our Festival Program and hear from artists themselves about the vitality of independent storytelling, the interwovenness of art, science, and culture, and so much more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The SDSA Awards Film 2023 has announced its nominations for its four categories, with a slate of awards season contenders including \u201cBarbie,\u201d \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d and \u201cMay December\u201d receiving nods for best set design.<\/p>\n<p>For best achievement in d\u00e9cor\/design of a contemporary feature film \u201cThe Killer,\u201d \u201cLeave the World Behind,\u201d \u201cMay December,\u201d \u201cMission Impossible \u2014 Dead Reckoning Part One\u201d and \u201cSaltburn\u201d were recognized. Nominated for best achievement in d\u00e9cor\/design of a period feature film were \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon,\u201d \u201cMaestro,\u201d \u201cNapoleon,\u201d \u201cOppenheimer\u201d and \u201cPoor Things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nominated for best achievement in d\u00e9cor\/design of a fantasy or science fiction film were \u201cBarbie,\u201d \u201cGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,\u201d \u201cThe Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,\u201d \u201cIndiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny\u201d and Wonka. \u201cAmerican Fiction,\u201d \u201cAre You There, God? It\u2019s Me, Margaret,\u201d \u201cAsteroid City,\u201d \u201cCandy Cane Lane\u201d and \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d were nominated for best achievement in d\u00e9cor\/design of a comedy or musical feature film.<\/p>\n<p>The Sundance Institute One House Filmmakers Fund has launched a multicultural Fund led by Gold House.<\/p>\n<p>Ten filmmakers will receive unrestricted funding \u2013 made possible by the East West Bank Foundation, mentorship and training needed to amplify their work as filmmakers from historically underrepresented communities <\/p>\n<p>In addition to Gold House, Sundance Institute, and East West Bank Foundation, the One House Filmmakers Fund\u2019s selections were made in collaboration with Latinx House, GLAAD, the NAACP Hollywood Bureau, and RespectAbility, whose executives served on the selection committee. The inaugural cohort of ten filmmakers will receive unrestricted funding, collaborative mentorship with established filmmakers and industry executives; skills training; comprehensive business-building support; and amplification through interactive programming hosted by Gold House and partners throughout the year. The filmmakers and respective projects in development in the 2024 cohort are:<\/p>\n<p>Arun Bhattarai for \u201cAgent of Happiness\u201d, Naveen Chaubal for \u201cPinball\u201d, Marissa Chib\u00e1s for \u201c1972,\u201d StormMiguel Florez for \u201cWelcome To Roswell,\u201d Jalena Keane-Lee for \u201cStanding Above the Clouds,\u201dSura Mallouh for \u201cUntitled Sura Mallouh Project,\u201d Wal\u00e9 Oy\u00e9jid\u00e9 for \u201cChiaroscuro,\u201d Otilia Portillo Padua for \u201cThe Queendom,\u201d Shrihari Sathe for \u201cDoha \u2013 The Rising Sun,\u201d Julie Forrest Wyman for \u201cUntitled Dwarfism Project.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe East West Bank Foundation is proud to be a founding partner of the One House Filmmakers Fund,\u201d said Dominic Ng, Chairman and CEO, East West Bank. \u201cOne of our main goals is to advance diversity and inclusion in all industries, including entertainment and the arts. If we\u2019re stronger together, then we\u2019d better start now.\u201d said Christine Yi, General Manager of the Gold House Creative Equity Fund.<\/p>\n<p>The Casting Society has announced that Ava DuVernay will receive the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement at the 39th annual Artios Awards on March 7. The awards honor the contributions of casting professionals in film, scripted and unscripted television, commercials and theater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAva DuVernay is a visionary storyteller who has staunchly championed casting professionals and the art of casting throughout her impactful career,\u201d said Destiny Lilly, president of CSA. \u201cHer passion for inclusive and progressive casting throughout her career has catapulted careers and made her a leader in the industry. We are thrilled to honor her with the Lynn Stalmaster Award at this year\u2019s ceremony.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DuVernay also commented on the honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn my film \u2018Origin,\u2019 the process of casting became the primary brushstroke on the canvas. Working with my casting director Aisha Coley to surround our leading lady Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was a joy and a thrill. Each of the actors in the \u2018Origin\u2019 ensemble are stellar in their experience, energy, intellect and enthusiasm,\u201d said DuVernay. \u201cThey are the latest in a series of extraordinary casts that I\u2019ve had the great honor of guiding over the years. To be recognized for those efforts by this esteemed organization is a true gift for which I\u2019m abundantly grateful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DuVernay\u2019s film \u201cOrigin\u201d is based on the book \u201cCaste: The Origins of Our Discontents\u201d by Isabel Wilkerson. It will have a wide release in theaters on Jan. 19.<\/p>\n<p>The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced the winners of the annual AWFJ EDA awards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBarbie\u201d took home multiple awards in the \u201cBest Of\u201d category, including Best Director for Greta Gerwig, Original Screenplay for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Supporting Actor for Ryan Gosling, and the film\u2019s casting directors Lucy Brava and Allison Jones also took home an award. Elsewhere, \u201cAmerican Fiction\u201d garnered multiple trophies, with Cord Jefferson winning adapted screenplay. Jeffrey Wright won for best actor, and the film tied with \u201cBarbie\u201d for Best Ensemble Cast, with casting director Jennifer Euston recognized. Jonathan Glazer\u2019s \u201cThe Zone of Interest\u201d won Best Film and Best International Film (UK and Poland).<\/p>\n<p>Best Documentary went to Matthew Heineman\u2019s \u201cAmerican Symphony\u201d and Anna Hints\u2019 \u201cSmoke Sauna Sisterhood.\u201d Hayao Miyazaki\u2019s \u201cThe Boy and the Heron\u201d was awarded Best Animated Film. In the acting categories, Lily Gladstone won Best Actress for her role in \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d and Da\u2019Vine Joy Randolph won Best Actress, Supporting for \u201cThe Holdovers.\u201d Rodrigo Prieto won Best Cinematography and Thelma Schoonmacher won Best Editing for \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AWFJ also awarded the EDA Female Focus Awards. Best Female Director went to Justine Triet for her Palme d\u2019or winner \u201cAnatomy of a Fall.\u201d Celine Song won Best Female Screenwriter for her film \u201cPast Lives.\u201d Hailee Steinfeld won Best Animated Female for her portrayal of Gwen Stacy in \u201cSpider-Man Across the Spider-Verse.\u201d Lily Gladstone took home a second award for Best Breakthrough Performance in \u201cKillers of the Flower Moon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lastly, Fran Drescher was recognized for Outstanding Achievement by a Woman in the Film Industry \u201cfor leading SAG-AFTRA through the actors\u2019 strike and standing strong for an equitable contract.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter Farrelly Joins \u2018Daruma\u2019 as Executive Producer<\/p>\n<p>Academy Award winner Peter Farrelly has joined the independent film \u201cDaruma\u201d as an executive producer. The film is set to screen at the Slamdance Film Festival on Jan. 21.<\/p>\n<p>The film is directed by Alexander Yellen and stars Barry Bostwick, Abigail Hawk, Tobias Forrest, John Lawson and Victoria Scott.<\/p>\n<p>Per the film\u2019s description, \u201cDaruma\u201d is \u201cthe story of a bitter wheelchair user (Forrest) who discovers he has a daughter from a forgotten fling and his journey to drive her across the country to live with her maternal grandfather (Bostwick). The only person who can help him is his cantankerous neighbor, a double amputee (Lawson).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis film is funny, moving, and very real,\u201d Farrelly said. \u201cThe story avoids the usual tropes about disability and speaks to all audiences. Tobias\u2019 performance as Patrick is fantastic.
