It\u2019s been a big start to 2024 for Colman Domingo and Ayo Edebiri who \u2014 after earning their first Oscar nomination and Emmy win, respectively \u2014 lead the pack of film and TV nominees for the 55th NAACP Image Awards.<\/p>\n
Domingo is nominated for three awards: outstanding actor in a motion picture for \u201cRustin,\u201d outstanding supporting actor for \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d and entertainer of the year, the ceremony\u2019s top prize.<\/p>\n
Edebiri is nominated for outstanding supporting actress for \u201cThe Bear\u201d and guest actress for \u201cAbbott Elementary.\u201d Victoria Mon\u00e9t received the most nominations in the music recording categories, earning six nods including outstanding new artist. The \u201cJaguar II\u201d hitmaker is followed closely by Usher, who earned five nominations including entertainer of the year.<\/p>\n
Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer \u2014 three multihyphenate talents who happened to share the screen with Domingo and Usher this year \u2014 round out the nominees for that award.<\/p>\n
Barrino has two nominations (the second for outstanding actress in a motion picture for \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d), while Bailey has three nominations (actress for \u201cThe Little Mermaid\u201d and supporting actress for \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d) and Palmer has four nominations (character voiceover performance for \u201cThe Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,\u201d directing in a TV movie or special for \u201cBig Boss\u201d and arts and entertainment podcast \u201cThis Is Keke Palmer\u201d).<\/p>\n
In the motion picture categories, \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d dominated with a leading 16 nods including outstanding motion picture. Rounding out that category are \u201cThey Cloned Tyrone\u201d (with 9 nominations), \u201cRustin\u201d (8 nominations), \u201cAmerican Fiction\u201d (7 nominations) and \u201cOrigin\u201d (4 nominations).<\/p>\n
The cast of \u201cThe Color Purple\u201d was nominated for the outstanding ensemble prize and each earned individual nominations, including for Barrino; Domingo and Corey Hawkins (supporting actor); Danielle Brooks, Bailey and Taraji P. Henson (supporting actress); and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi (breakthrough performance). Plus, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor \u2014 who plays Mama in the musical movie \u2013 was nominated for outstanding actress in a motion picture for \u201cOrigin.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other top film nominees include \u201cA Thousand and One\u201d (7 nominations, with star Teyana Taylor and filmmaker A.V. Rockwell earning two apiece), \u201cCreed III\u201d (7 nominations including an outstanding director nod for Michael B. Jordan), \u201cThe Blackening\u201d (which earned a nod for its ensemble cast and breakthrough creative Dewayne Perkins), \u201cThe Burial\u201d and \u201cThe Equalizer 3.\u201d<\/p>\n
On the TV side, \u201cAbbott Elementary\u201d leads with 9 nominations after winning top honors at the 2023 awards. Creator and star Quinta Brunson is again nominated for outstanding actress, while Tyler James Williams, William Stanford Davis, Janelle James and Sheryl Lee Ralph earned supporting actor nods. Rounding out the comedy category are \u201cSurvival of the Thickest\u201d (7 nominations), \u201cUnPrisoned\u201d (5 nominations), \u201cHarlem\u201d (4 nominations) and \u201cThe Neighborhood\u201d (3 nominations).<\/p>\n
The top drama series are Shonda Rhimes\u2019 \u201cQueen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story\u201d and the final season of \u201cSnowfall\u201d (both with 6 nominations); \u201cBel-Air\u201d (5 nominations); \u201cBlack Cake\u201d and \u201cFound\u201d (with 2 nominations apiece).<\/p>\n
\u201cSwarm\u201d leads the TV movie, limited series or dramatic special contenders with 5 nods, including for star Dominique Fishback and co-creators Janine Nabers and Donald Glover. Also nominated in the category are \u201cHeist 88\u201d (3 nominations); \u201cFirst Lady of BMF: The Tonesa Welch Story\u201d (2 nominations); \u201cBlack Girl Missing\u201d; and \u201cLawmen: Bass Reeves.\u201d Other top small screen programs include \u201cGodfather of Harlem\u201d (5 nominations) and \u201cThe Perfect Find\u201d (3 nominations).<\/p>\n
The winners will be revealed during the two\u2013hour live TV special, airing Sat., March 16 at 8:00 PM ET\/ PT on BET and CBS. NAACP will also recognize winners in non\u2013televised Image Awards categories March 11-14, which will stream via naacpimageawards.net.<\/p>\n
