As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences continues to figure out how and when to finally hold this year\u2019s Daytime Emmys \u2014 delayed in June due to the WGA strike \u2014 it has gone ahead and announced the nominations for this year\u2019s 2nd Annual Children\u2019s & Family Emmys.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s no date yet for this year\u2019s Chidren\u2019s & Family Emmys \u2014 NATAS is likely waiting for a hopeful soon resolution to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike before firming up dates. But last year, winners were announced during two ceremonies\u2014one focused on creative and technical arts, and the other to performances and programming\u2014at Wilshire Ebell Theatre on December 10 and 11. This year\u2019s CAFE will likely be held around the same time \u2014 and NATAS could very well use that timeframe to simultaneously finally hold the Daytime Emmys as well.<\/p>\n
In announcing this year\u2019s nominees, NATAS also supplied a disclaimer about the strike: \u201cThe majority of programs recognized in the Children\u2019s & Family Emmy Awards competition were produced under SAG-AFTRA agreements not subject to the current strike. However, some nominated programs remain struck. NATAS salutes the nominated performances of those SAG-AFTRA members who appeared in these programs but reminds nominees that it is a violation of the strike rules for SAG-AFTRA members to promote or publicize their nominations for struck work. <\/p>\n
\u201cSAG-AFTRA members are strongly advised to observe the strike rules at all times. NATAS is announcing the nominations today in hopes a fair deal will be reached prior to the awards ceremonies. The events themselves are produced under separate non-dramatic agreements that are not subject to the strike order. NATAS will modify ceremony formats as needed to respect any remaining strike obligations of guild members.\u201d<\/p>\n
NATAS also noted that nominees in one category judged in person \u2014 Interactive Media \u2014 will be announced later this month, as will honorees in two juried categories: Individual Achievement in Animation and the newly-created Public Service Initiative.<\/p>\n
\u201cProgramming created for children\u2019s and family viewing has a long history of leading the way in innovation and storytelling,\u201d said Brent Stanton, NATAS head of Daytime and Children\u2019s & Family Emmy Awards. \u201cIn this year specifically, a year so impacted by artists fighting for fair recognition of their true value, it is more important than ever to honor the excellence of their talents and achievements,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year the org created two new Emmy categories for puppetry performance and puppet design\/styling. Both awards will be handed out at this year\u2019s second-ever Children\u2019s & Family Emmys. The Children\u2019s & Family Emmys also added a public service initiative Emmy for campaigns that include both an on-air and off-air component.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very proud of the growth experienced in year two of the Children\u2019s and Family Emmys, especially in the development and cultivation of the new categories dedicated to puppetry,\u201d said Rachel Schwartz, NATAS\u2019 director of Daytime and Children\u2019s & Family Emmy Awards. <\/p>\n
