\"VarietyLogo1\"<\/a>The outsize success of Lionsgate\u2019s \u201cLa La Land\u201d is spurring Hollywood filmmakers to bring their projects to the studio, Lionsgate\u2019s top movie production executive said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe success of the movie shows the strength of the Lionsgate brand,\u201d said Erik Feig, president of the studio\u2019s motion picture group, during the company\u2019s conference call with analysts following its release of quarterly earnings.<\/p>\n

Feig also said that \u201cLa La Land\u201d has overperformed in every market, with the studio seeing \u201coverages\u201d resulting from its international output deals \u2014 which limit the downside when a film performs poorly. \u201cLa La Land\u201d has grossed more than $270 million in worldwide box office with an opening in China coming on Valentine\u2019s Day next Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Feig noted that Hollywood has \u201crediscovered\u201d the musical genre in recent months. He also said the studio is seeing benefits above and beyond monetary gains with an increase in filmmaker-driven projects since \u201cLa La Land\u201d opened in early December.<\/p>\n

\u201cFilmmakers have brought us a lot more movies,\u201d he added. \u201cThey see that we are willing to make a bet on an unconventional approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said during the call that \u201cLa La Land\u201d is a \u201cglobal box office phenomenon.\u201d U.S. grosses are nearing $120 million while foreign box office has hit $150 million.<\/p>\n

\u201cLa La Land,\u201d a whimsical comedy-drama set in an idealized Los Angeles, stars Emma Stone as an aspiring actress and Ryan Gosling as a struggling jazz musician who fall in and out of love. The movie, which has a $30 million budget, swept the Golden Globes with seven trophies, scored a record-tying 14 Oscar nominations, won the top movie award from the Producers Guild of America, and won a Directors Guild of America trophy for Damien Chazelle.<\/p>\n

Lionsgate\u2019s first major successes came with Tyler Perry\u2019s Madea movies and the Saw franchise a decade ago, then scored in 2012 with the launch of The Hunger Games teen franchise. Thanks to the 14 nominations by \u201cLa La Land,\u201d Lionsgate was the leading studio for this year\u2019s Oscar nominations with 26, including six for \u201cHacksaw Ridge,\u201d four for \u201cHell or High Water\u201d and two for \u201cDeepwater Horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Feltheimer expressed optimism Wednesday over \u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 2:,\u201d which opens Friday; \u201cPower Rangers,\u201d set for March 24; Tupac Shakur biopic \u201cAll Eyez on Me,\u201d which opens on Shakur\u2019s birthday on June 16; animated film \u201cMy Little Pony,\u201d opening Oct. 6; and \u201cRobin Hood,\u201d set for 2018 and starring Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx.<\/p>\n
