Apple TV+\u2019s documentary Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie sets itself apart from the deluge of celeb documentaries. Yes, it\u2019s a documentary about the actor\u2019s life and his battle with Parkinson\u2019s disease. Some may even approach it thinking they\u2019ve seen a doc like this before. But when you pull away from the film, it feels like you\u2019ve watched a fully-bodied autobiopic about the Family Ties and Back to the Future star.<\/p>\n
Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim and his editor Michael Harte (Three Identical Strangers) pulled off the feat by using moments from Fox\u2019s cinematic canon \u2014 Back to the Future, The Secret of My Success and Bright Lights, Big City among other titles \u2014 in re-creations of the movie and TV star\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Guggenheim explained during a panel for Still at Deadline\u2019s Contenders Television: Documentary + Unscripted awards-season event how the style came to be with Harte, particularly in those moments where they didn\u2019t have footage from Fox\u2019s early days.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes there\u2019s good battles and sometimes there\u2019s bad battles. This was a good battle,\u201d Guggenheim said about the creative arguments with his editor.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy solution was to do re-creations,\u201d the filmmakers says, \u201cAnd his solution was looking at Michael\u2019s movies and TV shows and reconstructing that material in a way that hadn\u2019t crossed my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the best case, [both those ideas] intermingled,\u201d Guggenheim said.<\/p>\n
Essentially, old movie and TV footage are interspliced with re-created scenes the director shot with another actor. When it came to showing Fox on his first date with now wife\/then girlfriend Tracy Pollan, moments from Bright Lights, Big City mixed with Guggenheim\u2019s footage.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou know it\u2019s from a movie, but when you\u2019re watching it you think they\u2019re falling in love,\u201d said Guggenheim, who also serves as a producer on Still.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a filmmaker, you understand the leap that the audience takes \u2014 once they want to imagine something, they do.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cMichael\u2019s life is the movies, and the movies are Michael\u2019s life,\u201d added Guggenheim, who drew inspiration from the candid actor\u2019s books Lucky Man and No Time Like the Future.<\/p>\n
Yet subverting audience expectations for a documentary was a great string for Guggenheim to pull on when paying homage to the comedic actor\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
Says Guggenheim, \u201cIt\u2019s about running toward your truth, and embracing the harder things in life \u2014 that\u2019s a universal idea that\u2019s very meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n
