Disney barely promoted the film\u2019s theatrical release, but it\u2019s starting to find an audience on home video.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViolent Night\u201d (Universal): Santa Claus (David Harbour) battles through his own \u201cDie Hard\u201d when terrorists descend on a rich family\u2019s Christmas in this thrilling action-comedy.<\/p>\n<p>New Indie<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere There\u201d (Magnolia): Acclaimed independent filmmaker Andrew Bujalski (\u201cSupport the Girls\u201d) shot this comedy-drama during COVID lockdown about, what else, isolation, starring Jason Schwartzman, Lily Taylor and Molly Gordon, among others. Each vignette was shot with individual actors who were then edited together in scenes, with narratives that interconnect as the film plays out. Innovative formally, but also representative of Bujalski\u2019s ability to create realistic human drama from low-key performances.<\/p>\n<p>Also available:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Long Dark Trail\u201d (Cleopatra): Two brothers escape their abusive father and embark on a search for their mother \u2014 who, it turns out, might be even worse \u2014 in this vintage-inspired horror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNana\u2019s Boys\u201d (Breaking Glass): When the power grid goes down, a queer New York man (David J. Cork, \u201cP-Valley\u201d) and his partner (Jared Wayne Gladly) have to take stock of their relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNorthern Shade\u201d (BayView): Christopher Rucinski\u2019s drama concerns an Army vet in search of his missing brother, who\u2019s been recruited by an extremist militia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBroker\u201d (Neon): Award-winning Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda (\u201cShoplifters\u201d) once again explores the connections between members of chosen families in this drama about the selling of orphans outside the legal adoption process, one where a birth mother finds the adoptive family to ensure that her baby has been given a good home. An unexpected extended family arises from this scenario, and the results are tender and humane, hallmarks of Kore-eda\u2019s acclaimed filmmaking.<\/p>\n<p>Also available:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdieu Paris\u201d (Icarus): Gerard Depardieu stars in this French comedy about the lives of Parisians in their 70s, and the disruption of a new person breaking into their tight circle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelle and Sebastian: The Adventure Continues\u201d (Film Movement): The sequel to the contemporary reboot of this classic French children\u2019s story about a boy and his highly intelligent dog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Family for 1640 Days\u201d (Icarus): In this French drama, a foster care family that has cared for a six-year-old boy since infancy must come to terms with the child\u2019s father reentering the picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe First Fallen\u201d (Dark Star): Brazilian filmmaker Rodrigo de Oliveira\u2019s debut feature concerns the beginning of AIDS in 80s Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiovanni\u2019s Island\u201d (GKIDS): This 2014 animated historical drama from Mizuho Nishikubo involves children in post-WWII Japan crossing boundaries of friendship and loyalty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHunt\u201d (Magnet): After a high-ranking North Korean official requests asylum, two different units of the same government agency must uncover an embedded spy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe King of Laughter\u201d (Film Movement): This turn-of-the-20th century historical drama stars Toni Servillo (\u201cGomorrah\u201d) as legendary Italian playwright Eduardo Scarpetta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPetit Mal\u201d (Dark Star): Colombian filmmaker Ruth Caudeli wrote, directed and stars in this autobiographical drama, a realistic portrayal of a polyamorous lesbian relationship.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProject Wolf Hunting\u201d (Well Go USA): Cargo ship convicts break out and unleash an even greater terror on board in this Korean thriller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShepherd: The Story of a Hero Dog\u201d (Shout Factory): Based on the novel \u201cThe Jewish Dog\u201d by Asher Kravitz, this period drama follows a pet German Shepherd separated from a Jewish family and then used by the SS at a Nazi concentration camp.<\/p>\n<p>New Documentary<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFraming Agnes\u201d (Kino Lorber): In the 1960s, UCLA conducted a study of gender non-conforming people; among the participants was an anonymous transgender woman, given the pseudonym \u201cAgnes,\u201d who was able to use the study to access resources for that era\u2019s version of gender-affirming medical care. This doc from director Chase Joynt (\u201cNo Ordinary Man\u201d) explores her legacy and its impact on queer and transgender history through the use of vintage reenactments featuring actors like \u201cPose\u201d star Angelica Ross. Formally innovative and full of real information in a political atmosphere of frenzied misinformation, \u201cFraming Agnes\u201d takes the past and makes it thrillingly contemporary.<\/p>\n<p>Also available:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalendar Girls\u201d (Greenwich): A dance team for women over 60 in Florida gets a fun-loving documentary dedicated to their flashy costumes and unbridled energy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChildren of the Mist\u201d (Film Movement): In the mountains of northern Vietnam, an indigenous Hmong community \u2014 and specifically a 12-year-old girl named Di \u2014 grapples with the still-accepted tradition of \u201cbride kidnapping.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConcert for George\u201d (Craft Recordings\/Abramorama): A 20th anniversary concert celebrating George Harrison featuring Paul McCartney, Tom Petty, Ravi Shankar, Ringo Starr and Jeff Lynne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGLOW: The Story of The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling\u201d (AGFA): The fractured story of the wildest 80s wrestling show to hit broadcast television.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows\u201d (Canadian International Pictures): This 1998 doc about famed wrestler Bret \u201cThe Hitman\u201d Hart gets a Blu-ray release bursting with special features for super-fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKentridge &#038; Dumas In Conversation\u201d (Icarus Films Home Video): Director Catherine Meyburgh followed contemporary artists William Kentridge and Marlene Dumas from dinner conversations to studio visits to uncover their art practice and why they do what they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA Life\u2019s Work\u201d (First Run Features): A project 15 years in the making, the film follows four people working on very long-term projects \u2014 a researcher, tree farmers, a gospel music archivist, and an architect \u2014 and explores what it means to wait for results.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRuth Weiss: One More Step West Is the Sea\u201d (IndiePixUnlimited): Explores the life and legacy of pioneering (and enduring) Beat Generation poet Ruth Weiss, who worked into her 90s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSalvatore: Shoemaker of Dreams\u201d (Sony Pictures Entertainment): Salvatore Ferragamo\u2019s incident-and-imagination packed life as shoemaker to the stars gets an appropriately lush documentary from Luca Guadagnino.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Return of Swamp Thing\u201d (Lightyear): She has many achievements, but Heather Locklear\u2019s greatest might be this 1989 romp, which belongs in the B-Movie Hall of Fame. As Abigail Arcane, she has to battle her evil scientist stepfather and some creatures called Un-Men, all with the help of the titular marsh monster.
