Rockwell was awarded the top prize for \u201cA Thousand and One.\u201d Rockwell is the third Black woman to win the Grand Jury Prize for the U.S. Dramatic Competition at the festival, following Nikyatu Jusu\u2019s 2022 win for surreal thriller \u201cNanny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think of Black women filmmakers and there are still not many doing it at the highest level,\u201d Rockwell told IndieWire\u2019s Eric Kohn of breaking barriers, \u201cbut I think that going from making one or two if they\u2019re lucky theatrical movies to now being able to consistently make movies into our seventies or eighties, that\u2019s what success will really look like to me. If I choose to make films until I can\u2019t wake up anymore, I have that ability, because the industry creates space for our voices in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mary Nighy and Zelda Williams, the daughters of famous actors Bill Nighy and Robin Williams, plus Alice Englert, the daughter of Oscar winner Jane Campion, are making their own first-time features, as well as actresses Lily Rabe, Molly Gordon, Laura Chinn, and Brittany Snow turning to directing.<\/p>\n<p>In the TV space, Nzingha Stewart helms Amazon series \u201cDaisy Jones and the Six\u201d coming off of acclaimed Netflix shows \u201cMaid\u201d and \u201cInventing Anna,\u201d while \u201cSuccession\u201d and \u201cJessica Jones\u201d director S.J. Clarkson recently directed six episodes of \u201cAnatomy of a Scandal\u201d and previously helmed Marvel\u2019s Netflix series \u201cJessica Jones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Domont at the IndieWire Sundance Studio, Presented by Dropbox on January 21, 2023 in Park City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>Chloe Domont, \u201cFair Play\u201d<br \/>\nAfter directing episodes of \u201cBillions,\u201d \u201cBallers,\u201d and \u201cSuits,\u201d Chloe Domont put the hyperactive world of investment banking on display in Sundance darling \u201cFair Play.\u201d The film, also written by Dumont and starring Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich, landed a whopping $20 million distribution deal from Netflix after debuting at 2023 Sundance. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, just talking to women coming up to me saying, \u2018I\u2019ve never felt this seen before.\u2019 To me, that\u2019s why I make movies,&#8217;\u201d Domont told IndieWire\u2019s Eric Kohn. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiven the audience reactions to this movie and how people audibly respond to this film, it\u2019s looking like everyone wants to have a theatrical run, so we\u2019re working on that element,\u201d Domont said. \u201cIt really depends on the film and the kinds of reactions the audience have coming out the film that determines that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>IndieWire\u2019s Ryan Lattanzio praised the film for going \u201coff like a bomb laced with the explosive and dually depraved chemistry of the two leads.\u201d Comparing the drama to if Adrian Lyne directed \u201cIndustry,\u201d Lattanzio wrote that audiences will be \u201cmore than happy to merrily go to hell\u201d with the twisted seduction of the film\u2019s leading characters.<\/p>\n<p>Molly Gordon at the IndieWire Sundance Studio, Presented by Dropbox on January 20, 2023 in Park City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>Molly Gordon, \u201cTheater Camp\u201d<br \/>\nActress Molly Gordon, known for her roles in \u201cBooksmart,\u201d \u201cRamy,\u201d and recently, \u201cYou People,\u201d makes her directorial debut with \u201cTheater Camp.\u201d Gordon also wrote, produced, and stars in the film that premiered at 2023 Sundance. \u201cTheater Camp\u201d follows an eccentric staff of a rundown theater camp in upstate New York to keep the organization running. Gordon co-wrote and co-directed with Nick Lieberman. The ensemble cast is comprised of Ben Platt, Jimmy Tatro, Ayo Edebiri, Amy Sedaris, Nathan Lee Graham, and co-writer Noah Galvin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe dedicated the movie to all of our drama teachers, even though we\u2019re making fun of them,\u201d Gordon told IndieWire. \u201cBecause when they\u2019re telling you to do crazy things, it is this first moment of feeling seen. I was never that good in school, and when I was in my acting classes, anything was possible and there was no wrong answer. That first moment where you can really own your intelligence, even if they\u2019re asking you to crawl as a lion or whatever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raven Jackson, \u201cAll Dirt Roads Taste of Salt\u201d<br \/>\nRaven Jackson wrote and directed sprawling drama \u201cAll Dirt Roads Taste of Salt,\u201d which debuted at this year\u2019s Sundance. Billed as a decades-spanning exploration of a woman\u2019s life in Mississippi and an ode to the generations of people, places, and ineffable moments that shape us, the film marked Jackson\u2019s feature debut. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people in Jackson\u2019s film are likewise inextricable from their environment, a relationship personified by how the women carry on a West African tradition which centers on eating clay dirt right out of the earth,\u201d IndieWire critic David Ehrlich wrote. \u201cThere are a number of pragmatic reasons why some Southern Black communities still continue to practice geophagia, but Jackson naturally opts for a more poetic explanation\u2026When Jackson gets the balance right, those moments don\u2019t just feel as if they could last forever, they feel as if they already do.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>PARK CITY, UTAH &#8211; JANUARY 19: Director Rachel Lambert attends the 2023 Sundance Film Festival &#8220;Sometimes I Think About Dying&#8221; Premiere at Library Center Theatre on January 19, 2023 in Park City, Utah. She rethinks her outlook on life after connecting with a new coworker. Dave Merheje, Parvesh Cheena, and Megan Stalter also star. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cRidley and Lambert do winning work,\u201d IndieWire\u2019s Kate Erbland wrote in the review. <\/p>\n<p>Director Lambert told IndieWire that the script \u201creally struck a chord,\u201d especially when she read it in November 2020. \u201cSometimes I Think About Dying\u201d is really about \u201cthe struggle to get through a day, at times,\u201d Lambert said, adding that it was important to not be \u201ctrying to diagnose or find a reason\u201d for Fran\u2019s unhappiness.<\/p>\n<p>Up next, Lambert also is set to direct and star in \u201cI Can Feel You Walking.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA &#8211; MARCH 13: Adele Lim attends the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards at Fairmont Century Plaza on March 13, 2022 in Los Angeles, California. Written and directed by McKendrick, the coming-of-age film centers on a broke, single millennial who has an existential crisis when she freezes her eggs.<\/p>\n<p>McKendrick is also writing the script for the upcoming \u201cI Know What You Did Last Summer\u201d film directed by \u201cDo Revenge\u201d breakout Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, plus penning \u201cGrease\u201d prequel \u201cSummer Lovin.&#8217;\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Raine Allen Miller, \u201cRye Lane\u201d<br \/>\nDirector Raine Allen-Miller helms rom-com \u201cRye Lane\u201d about two young adults who bond over bad breakups over the course of one day in South London. The drama debuted at Sundance 2023, with the IndieWire review citing Niasari\u2019s personal connection to the subject matter \u201cwhich is modeled after Niasari\u2019s own upbringing and her mother\u2019s attempt to escape her own abusive husband, along with the strict moral codes of Iranian culture.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Mary Nighy at Alice Darling premiere<br \/>\nMary Nighy, \u201cAlice, Darling\u201d<br \/>\nAfter getting her start as an actress in films like \u201cMarie Antoinette\u201d and \u201cTormented,\u201d Mary Nighy began directing series such as HBO hit \u201cIndustry\u201d and \u201cTraces.\u201d Nighy made her feature debut with \u201cAlice, Darling\u201d about surviving emotional abuse in a romantic relationship. David Tennant, Glenn Close, Dan Levy, and Samira Wiley star.<\/p>\n<p>Laurel Parmet at the IndieWire Sundance Studio, Presented by Dropbox on January 22, 2023 in Park City, Utah.<\/p>\n<p>Laurel Parmet, \u201cThe Starling Girl\u201d<br \/>\nLaurel Parmet spent years researching fundamentalist Christian religious communities for \u201cThe Starling Girl,\u201d which debuted at this year\u2019s Sundance. Eliza Scanlen stars as teenager Jem Starling who begins a romantic relationship with a new pastor (Lewis Pullman). <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a very patriarchal culture. Like it or not, our country is very much affected by conservative Christian thought,\u201d Parmet said during the 2023 IndieWire Sundance Studio. \u201cI think sexual shame is a universal experience for women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parmet continued, \u201cI had a similar relationship in this film when I was a teenager with an older man, and I had a lot of guilt about it afterward. I had a lot of agency in the relationship; I really pursued him and didn\u2019t think about it for a really long time. I decided that I wanted to look back at my relationship and set it in this world that has a lot in common with our world and as a reflection of what we experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tayarisha Poe at 2019 Sundance<br \/>\nTayarisha Poe, \u201cThe Young Wife\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cDave\u201d and \u201cTwilight Zone\u201d helmer Tayarisha Poe writes and directs \u201cThe Young Wife\u201d about a woman grappling with the meaning of commitment on her wedding day. Rockwell, \u201cA Thousand and One\u201d<br \/>\nFirst-time feature filmmaker A.V. Rockwell won the top prize at this year\u2019s Sundance for gritty drama \u201cA Thousand and One\u201d starring Teyana Taylor as a mother who kidnaps her son from a foster home to raise him. Rockwell wrote and executive produced the film which wowed at the festival. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really wanted to tell a story that honored the women that I saw as my heroes growing up, just the Black mothers who hold down their families and communities as matriarchs. Kevin Nealon, Talia Balsam, and Jermaine Fowler star in Steen\u2019s first feature.<\/p>\n<p>Nzingha Stewart, \u201cDaisy Jones and the Six\u201d<br \/>\nNzingha Stewart helms four episodes of Prime Video\u2019s \u201cDaisy Jones and the Six\u201d novel adaptation starring Riley Keough and Sam Claflin. Stewart additionally co-executive produces, just as she did with 2022 Netflix film \u201cFrom Scratch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With past shows including \u201cInventing Anna,\u201d \u201cMaid,\u201d and \u201cLittle Fires Everywhere,\u201d which is also produced by Reese Witherspoon\u2019s Hello Sunshine which adapted \u201cDaisy Jones &#038; the Six,\u201d Stewart has tightened her grip on the pulse of viral TV series. Up next, she is set to direct \u201cCross\u201d based on James Patterson\u2019s Alex Cross novels with Aldis Hodge, Isaiah Mustafa, and Ryan Eggold starring.<\/p>\n<p>Hannah Pearl Utt, \u201cCora Bora\u201d<br \/>\nHannah Pearl Utt directs 2023 SXSW-selected comedy \u201cCora Bora\u201d starring \u201cHacks\u201d actress Megan Stalter as the titular Cora who tries to win back her girlfriend. Williams now teams up with Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (\u201cJuno,\u201d \u201cJennifer\u2019s Body\u201d) for \u201cLisa Frankenstein\u201d about a high school girl who accidentally re-animates a handsome Victorian corpse during a lightning storm.
