To be clear, \u201cEEAAO\u201d was a studio-backed opening night premiere (not one of the smaller movies launched in competition at the indie-focused fest), but you can still feel the excitement in Austin around the landmark Oscar win. After all, SXSW was the first festival to take Daniels seriously, awarding them top prize for their Battles music video (\u201cMy Machines\u201d) in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>Will any of the movies or directors screening here this year go on to change film history?<\/p>\n<p>Ryuichi Sakamoto, Oscar Winner for \u2018Last Emperor\u2019 Score, Dies at 71<br \/>\nWith five days still to go at SXSW, the juries convened (after viewing and deliberating remotely, out of COVID precautions) to present the winners.<\/p>\n<p>Narrative feature honors went to writer-director Paris Zarcilla\u2019s \u201cRaging Grace.\u201d On the surface, the tense story of an undocumented Filipina house cleaner and her young daughter might appear to echo 2022 Sundance winner \u201cNanny,\u201d though the film \u201csubverts expectations on its way to a stirring conclusion,\u201d in the jury\u2019s words.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn cleverly employing genre tropes to explore vast socio political matters, Zarcilla has crafted a resonant, urgent work about labor, legacy and diaspora,\u201d explained the jury of three \u2014 Helena Andrews-Dyer, Tomris Laffly and Richard Lawson \u2014 who also awarded special jury recognitions for performance to \u201cParachute\u201d star Courtney Eaton and cinematography to \u201cStory Ave\u201d DP Eric Branco.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary jury \u2014 consisting of Mae Abdulbaki, Joel Anderson and Allegra Frank \u2014 described top winner \u201cAngel Applicant\u201d as \u201ca revelation,\u201c complimenting director Ken August Meyer\u2019s exploration of artist Paul Klee, with whom he shares the condition of scleroderma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe result is a yearslong undertaking that is stunning, powerful, and unforgettable,\u201d the jury said.
