Ireland has received its first nomination for the best international feature Oscar for The Quiet Girl.<\/p>\n
Overall, movies from 92 countries and regions were eligible for this year\u2019s Academy Awards in the best international feature category, including some that have never earned a nomination before. But once the shortlist of 15 remaining titles was cut down to the five Oscar nominees, unveiled on Tuesday morning, only one country could celebrate earning its first-ever nod in the category.<\/p>\n
Among the shortlisted countries, three had never been nominated for the best international feature honor, which was previously called the best foreign-language film Oscar. They were Morocco (with its submission The Blue Caftan) and Ireland, each of which had made the shortlist once before, as well as Pakistan (Joyland), which had not reached the shortlist before.<\/p>\n
Ireland\u2019s contender The Quiet Girl, writer-director Colm Bair\u00e9ad\u2019s first feature, focuses on a withdrawn child peeking out of her shell during a summer stay with relatives in rural Ireland. In its review, THR called it \u201ca tiny jewel, fragile and lovely,\u201d as well as \u201can affecting coming-of-age drama about the nourishment of kindness.\u201d The film debuted at the Berlin Film Festival 2022, winning a Crystal Bear best film honor from the Generation Kplus jury and receiving a special mention from the children\u2019s jury.<\/p>\n
The country\u2019s first-ever nominee will compete for the international feature Oscar with Germany\u2019s All Quiet on the Western Front, Poland\u2019s EO, Belgium\u2019s Close and Argentina\u2019s Argentina, 1985.<\/p>\n
Bair\u00e9ad and producer Cleona N\u00ed Chrualaoi from Insc\u00e9al, the production company behind The Quiet Girl (An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain), said they were \u201chonored beyond words.\u201d They added: \u201cThis is a truly historic and meaningful moment for Irish film, the Irish people and the Irish language. Never before has an Irish film been nominated in this category. Never before has Irish-language art been given such a platform. This film has been an extraordinary labor of love and it has been a joy to see audiences the world over take it into their hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n
D\u00e9sir\u00e9e Finnegan, CEO of Screen Ireland, said: \u201cThe beautiful film that Colm Bair\u00e9ad has made in An Cail\u00edn Ci\u00fain is an incredible achievement, as is the work from the film\u2019s cast and crew, from Kate McCullough\u2019s stunning cinematography to Stephen Rennicks\u2019 emotive score, and of course, Catherine Clinch\u2019s heart-breaking performance.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pakistan\u2019s Oscar entry, Saim Sadiq\u2019s debut feature Joyland, observes the tension within a Pakistani family suffocated by societal conventions. The THR review called the film, which was part of the Cannes Film Festival\u2019s Un Certain Regard sidebar lineup last year and won its jury prize, \u201can aching consideration of gender and sexuality.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n Morocco\u2019s submission The Blue Caftan, writer-director Maryam Touzani\u2019s second feature, centers on a melancholy relationship triangle involving an artisanal tailor, his dying wife and his male apprentice. The THR review of the movie, which also screened in the Un Certain Regard program at Cannes, called it \u201ca work of handcrafted beauty,\u201d adding its creator returned \u201cthree years after her well-received debut feature, Adam, with a work of even more transfixing delicacy and restraint.\u201d<\/p>\n The 95th Oscars ceremony, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 12.
