Variety Announces 10 Directors to Watch for 2023: <\/h1>\n

Pop quiz: What do the filmmakers who won this year\u2019s top Sundance prize (Nikyatu Jusu, \u201cNanny\u201d), Cannes\u2019 Palme d\u2019Or (Ruben \u00d6stlund, \u201cThe Triangle of Sadness\u201d) and Oscar\u2019s best picture trophy (Sian Heder, \u201cCODA\u201d) have in common? They\u2019re all veterans of Variety\u2019s 10 Directors to Watch list \u2014 which also counts Taika Waititi, Chlo\u00e9 Zhao and Andrew Dominik among its alums.<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s time to unveil the class of 2023, featuring 10 helmers with current and near-future projects set to launch their careers to the next level. The directors will be profiled in the first print edition of the new year, timed to an event in their honor at the Palm Springs Int\u2019l Film Festival in early January.<\/p>\n

The lineup represents a diverse mix of up-and-coming directors whose films \u2014 all first or second narrative features \u2014 distinguished themselves earlier this year on the festival circuit or else are set to premiere in 2023.<\/p>\n

\nTwo of the films, Alice Diop\u2019s \u201cSaint Omer\u201d and Saim Sadiq\u2019s \u201cJoyland\u201d were selected to represent their home countries (France and Pakistan, respectively) in the best international feature category at the upcoming Academy Awards. Cannes discovery \u201cAftersun,\u201d directed by Charlotte Wells, and Toronto breakout \u201cThe Inspection\u201d from Elegance Bratton, have already racked up nominations from the Gotham and Film Independent Spirit Awards.<\/p>\n

Titles to look forward to in the new year include \u201cDesperate Housewives\u201d star Eva Longoria\u2019s directorial debut, \u201cFlamin\u2019 Hot,\u201d an inspirational (and irreverent) Searchlight release about the man whose tongue-scorching Cheetos recipe earned Frito Lay a fortune. Former CAA assistant Elijah Bynum\u2019s \u201cMagazine Dreams\u201d confirms the promise of his Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet-starring debut \u201cHot Summer Nights.\u201d In Bynum\u2019s new film, destined for a 2023 festival premiere, Jonathan Majors delivers an unforgettable performance as a competitive bodybuilder with serious social anxiety.<\/p>\n

Focus Features produced British writer-director Nida Manzoor\u2019s \u201cPolite Society,\u201d a movie with \u201cBend It Like Beckham\u201d crowdpleaser potential about a British Pakistani teen who\u2019s determined to sabotage her older sister\u2019s wedding. Also enriched by its helmer\u2019s cultural heritage is Jingyi Shao\u2019s \u201cChang Can Dunk,\u201d a Disney Studios production about a vertically challenged Chinese American high school athlete who gets himself in trouble after making a wager that he can slam the ball by season\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

In \u201cThe Starling Girl,\u201d writer-director Laurel Parmet takes seriously the sexual awakening of a Southern girl raised in a conservative religious community. Things get tricky for her after starting a relationship with her youth pastor. That feature shares certain elements in common with Maggie Betts\u2019 2017 Sundance nun debut, \u201cNovitiate.\u201d Betts was selected for this year\u2019s list on the basis of her sophomore feature, forthcoming Amazon-produced courtroom drama \u201cThe Burial,\u201d starring Jamie Foxx and Tommy Lee Jones.<\/p>\n
