And now, with the third edition of Deadline\u2019s Contenders Film: International kicking off Saturday at 8 a.m. PT, that outreach expands even further: leaving a carbon-free footprint, our online event will showcase the myriad films that soared at Sundance, beguiled Berlin, captivated Cannes, thrilled Telluride, vitalized Venice and touched Toronto, all the while shining a spotlight on the must-see movies that might have flown under your radar.<\/p>\n<p>Since submissions accepted for the Best International Feature Film Oscar category continue to grow \u2014 up by something like 30% from just 10 years ago, buoyed no doubt by the boundary-breaking success of 2019\u2019s Parasite \u2014 it is harder than ever before to see where the awards race is going. Today\u2019s event is here to help you cut through the noise, talking to stars, directors, producers and writers to find the stories behind the scenes for an audience that wants to know where the new Drive My Car may be heading from.<\/p>\n<p>This year is a wide-open field. From Cannes alone we have Lukas Dhont\u2019s Close (Belgium), Saim Sadiq\u2019s Joyland, Mario Martone\u2019s Nostalgia (Italy), Park Chan-wook\u2019s Decision to Leave (South Korea), Jerzy Skolimoswki\u2019s EO (Poland), Ali Abbasi\u2019s Holy Spider (Denmark), Marie Kreutzer\u2019s Corsage (Austria) and, from Sweden, Tarik Saleh\u2019s Cairo Conspiracy (which debuted there as Boy From Heaven).<\/p>\n<p>From the Berlinale there\u2019s Michael Koch\u2019s A Piece of Sky (Switzerland), Gu\u00f0mundur Arnar Gu\u00f0mundsson\u2019s Beautiful Beings (Iceland), and Carla Simon\u2019s Alcarr\u00e0s (Spain), while from Sundance there\u2019s Gabriel Martins\u2019 Mars One (Brazil) and Maryna Er Gorbach\u2019s Klondike (Ukraine). Venice, meanwhile, is represented by the likes of Alejandro Gonz\u00e1les I\u00f1\u00e1rittu\u2019s Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths (Mexico), Lorenzo Vigas\u2019 The Box (Venezuela), Alice Diop\u2019s Saint Omer, Erik Matti\u2019s On the Job: The Missing 8, and Santiago Mitre\u2019s Argentina, 1985 (Argentina).<\/p>\n<p>Toronto gives us Darin J. Sallam\u2019s Farha (Jordan), Edward Berger\u2019s All Quiet on the Western Front (Germany) and Gunnar Vikene\u2019s War Sailor (Norway). And that\u2019s before we get to Lou Yi-an\u2019s Goddamned Asura (Taiwan) there is He Suming\u2019s Ajoomma (Singapore), Jason Loftus\u2019 Eternal Spring (Canada), Pan Encina\u2019s Eami (Paraguay), Philip Yung\u2019s Where the Wind Blows (Hong Kong), Pan Nalin\u2019s Last Film Show (India), Colm Bair\u00e9ad\u2019s The Quiet Girl (Ireland) and Martijn de Jong\u2019s Narcosis (Netherlands).<\/p>\n<p>As is true of every year, it\u2019s an incredibly rich and diverse section: thrillers, comedies dramas and even hybrid docs that deal with issues ranging from the global to the private.
