\"VarietyLogo1\"<\/a>Kate Nowlin\u2019s thriller \u201cBlood Stripe,\u201d directed by Remy Auberjonois, has won the U.S. Fiction Award at the LA Film Festival.<\/p>\n

The movie, which marks Auberjonois\u2019 feature debut, centers on a Marine sergeant returning home to find herself hemorrhaging anxiety and paranoia from unseen wounds. Auberjonois directed from a script he co-wrote with Nowlin.<\/p>\n

Producers are Schuyler Weiss, Julie Christeas, Auberjonois and Nowlin. Tom Lipinski, Chris Sullivan, Rusty Schwimmer and Auberjonois\u2019 father Rene also star.<\/p>\n

The nine-day festival, now in its 22nd year, closes Thursday night with a screening of \u201cDesierto,\u201d starring Gael Garcia Bernal. \u201cLowriders\u201d was the opening night film.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Fiction Jury also awarded a special mention for comedy for \u201cChee and T,\u201d directed by Tanuj Chopra; and a special mention for visual accomplishment for Amber Tamblyn\u2019s drama \u201cPaint it Black.\u201d Tamblyn co-wrote the script with Ed Dougherty and produced with Wren Arthur, Amy Hobby and Anne Hubbell.<\/p>\n

The \u201cPaint It Black\u201d cast includes Janet McTeer, Alia Shawkat, Alfred Molina, Emily Rios and Rhys Wakefield in a story of a woman unable to process the death of her true love.<\/p>\n

The fest\u2019s World Fiction Award went to \u201cHEIS (chronicles),\u201d directed by Ana\u00efs Volp\u00e9 of France in a story of a millennial artist who returns to her mother\u2019s home in Paris, only to have her personal ambitions confronted by her family\u2019s expectations.<\/p>\n

The World Fiction Jury awarded a special mention to \u201cLupe Under the Sun,\u201d directed by Rodrigo Reyes in the story of a man who discovers he\u2019s about to die after a lifetime working in the California fields and tries to return to Mexico to make amends.<\/p>\n

The Documentary Award went to \u201cPolitical Animals,\u201d directed by Jonah Markowitz and Tracy Wares. The film focuses on the first openly gay California State Representatives \u2014 Sheila Kuehl, Jackie Goldberg, Christine Kehoe and Carole Migden \u2014 introducing the legislation that fundamentally changed the landscape of LGBT rights.<\/p>\n

\u201cPolitical Animals\u201d also won the Audience Award for top documentary.<\/p>\n

The LA Muse Award was given to \u201cNamour,\u201d directed by Heidi Saman and starring Karim Saleh, Waleed Zuaiter, Mona Hala and Nicole Haddad. The story centers on a twenty-something Egyptian-American valet driver who must come to grips with his dead-end job, disintegrating family and disappearing relationships.<\/p>\n

The LA Muse Jury awarded a special mention to \u201cNo Light and No Land Anywhere,\u201d directed by Amber Sealey about a woman who leaves her life and husband in London to come to Los Angeles in pursuit of the father who abandoned her when she was three.<\/p>\n

The festival\u2019s Nightfall Award went to \u201cBeyond The Gates,\u201d directed by Jackson Stewart about two estranged brothers who dig through their missing father\u2019s video store, discovering a VCR board game that holds a connection to their father\u2019s disappearance and deadly consequences for anyone who plays it.<\/p>\n

Audience Award for Fiction Feature Film went to Ryon Baxter\u2019s \u201cGreen \/ Is \/ Gold,\u201d starring Jimmy Baxter, Ryon Baxter, David Fine, Liz Clare and Shelley Mitchell. The story centers on a wayward tween who has nowhere to live except with his high school dropout brother, who is building \u2014 at all costs \u2014 a marijuana business.<\/p>\n
