For the first time, participants in the Disney Directing Program will be given guaranteed slots to direct episodes of some of the studio\u2019s biggest shows, including ABC\u2019s \u201cBlack-ish,\u201d Freeform\u2019s \u201cGood Trouble\u201d and FX\u2019s \u201cSnowfall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s in addition to the program\u2019s offerings of mentorship, shadowing assignments and advanced professional development. Aspiring directors in the program, which launched in 2001, have never before additionally been promised such directing slots. The announcement was made by Tim McNeal, senior vice president, creative talent development and inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are proud to evolve our directing program this season into a dedicated pipeline that will guarantee episodes to first-time TV directors, a critical stepping stone for professional advancement and opportunity,\u201d McNeal said. \u201cWe are grateful for the support and partnership of our participating Disney productions, showrunners and producers, as well as our creative executives and senior leaders, who are all helping accelerate our participants\u2019 careers and ensuring that diverse directing talent is fostered and championed at our company.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other shows where program participants will direct episodes include ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Good Doctor,\u201d Disney Channel\u2019s \u201cRaven\u2019s Home,\u201d Fox\u2019s \u201cThe Resident\u201d (produced by Disney\u2019s 20th TV) and ABC\u2019s \u201cThe Rookie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guarantee to direct an episode of television for these worthy and diverse candidates ensures they will truly be able to demonstrate their talent, which is just waiting to emerge,\u201d said Thomas Schlamme, executive producer of \u201cSnowfall\u201d and outgoing president of the Directors Guild of America. \u201cIt is a benefit not only to them but to our industry as a whole.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s how the 2021 DGE directing program cohort will be assigned: actor-turned-director Iona Morris (\u201cBlack-ish\u201d); Emmy-winning documentary director Cayman Grant (\u201cThe Good Doctor\u201d); indie filmmaker and production coordinator Jade Holmes Christian (\u201cSnowfall\u201d); cinematographer\/director Stephanie Martin (\u201cThe Resident\u201d); branded content\/commercial director and indie filmmaker Carla Dauden (\u201cGood Trouble\u201d); writer\/actor\/director Jade Jenise Dixon (\u201cRaven\u2019s Home\u201d); and filmmaker Lanre Olabisi (\u201cThe Rookie\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>Alumni of the program include Regina King (\u201cInsecure\u201d), Pete Chatmon (\u201cblack-ish\u201d), Jude Weng (\u201cgrown-ish\u201d), Zetna Fuentes (\u201cJane the Virgin\u201d), Jaffar Mahmood (\u201cYoung Sheldon\u201d), Tessa Blake (\u201cA Million Little Things\u201d), and Nzingha Stewart (\u201cLittle Fires Everywhere\u201d). The program also merged with the former Fox Directors Lab\/Fox Global Directors Initiative after Disney\u2019s acquisition of Fox, whose notable directing alumni include Maggie Kiley (\u201cRiverdale\u201d), Alexis Ostrander (\u201cCruel Summer\u201d), Marcus Stokes (\u201c9-1-1\u201d), Marta Cunningham (\u201cModern Love\u201d), Bert and Bertie (\u201cThe Great\u201d), Sydney Freeland (\u201cReservation Dogs\u201d) and Steph Green (\u201cWatchmen\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our pleasure to participate in the DGE Directing Program this year, which has introduced us to talented first-time television directors not already on our radar,\u201d said Joanna Johnson, showrunner and executive producer of Freeform\u2019s \u201cGood Trouble.\u201d \u201cOn \u2018Good Trouble,\u2019 we\u2019ve given many directors their first episodes of TV and have had great results in doing so.
