Hulu has landed rights to \u201cDerek DelGaudio\u2019s In & Of Itself,\u201d the movie version of illusionist\u2019s one-man stage show that ran Off-Broadway.<\/p>\n
The Frank Oz-directed film will debut on Hulu on Jan. 22, 2021.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn & Of Itself\u201d was filmed live in an intimate New York City theater. The show, exploring themes of identity and illusion, is intentionally described in a vague nature. Oz maintains that audiences need to watch the film to understand.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne of the things I love about \u2018In & Of Itself\u2019 is that it can\u2019t be explained. It has to be seen. And now it can be \u2014 on Hulu,\u201d Oz said. \u201cAnd I can\u2019t wait to hear people\u2019s reaction to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
In a review for IndieWire, critic Eric Kohn called the 90-minute feature a mix of \u201cstage trickery and alluring autobiographical asides.\u201d He wrote, \u201cDelGaudio transforms the usual shock-and-awe routine into a powerful meditation on existential yearning and his own bumpy quest for meaning in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIn & Of Itself\u201d was executive produced by Stephen Colbert and his wife Evelyn McGee Colbert, as well as Daryl Roth and Tom Werner. Glenn Kaino, Vanessa Lauren and Jake Friedman served as producers.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvie and I are honored to have helped Derek and Frank create this beautiful and mysterious film,\u201d Colbert said.<\/p>\n
Oz, who directed movies including \u201cIn & Out,\u201d \u201cDirty Rotten Scoundrels,\u201d and \u201cDeath at a Funeral\u201d and voiced characters on \u201cStar Wars,\u201d \u201cMuppets\u201d and \u201cSesame Street,\u201d also staged \u201cIn & Of Itself\u201d during its Off-Broadway run and at the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. The stage show, which was backed by Neil Patrick Harris, was initially supposed to play Off Broadway for 10 weeks but ended up extending its stint for 72 weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn & Of Itself\u201d was originally slated to screen at this year\u2019s South by Southwest Film Festival, which was canceled due to the pandemic. Instead, the movie is having its world premiere at the Montclair Film Festival.<\/p>\n
\u201cI couldn\u2019t be prouder of this film,\u201d DelGaudio said. \u201cIt\u2019s unlike anything that exists and I can\u2019t wait for everyone to see it on Hulu.\u201d<\/p>\n
The deal was negotiated by Submarine Entertainment and Ramo Law on behalf of the filmmakers.<\/p>\n
