\"deadline-hollywood-logo-o\"In a good year for English-language remakes, Sara Colangelo\u2019s take on the 2015 Israeli film of the same name by Nadav Lapid built on the momentum it gained in Sundance with a TIFF bow in the run-up to its release by Netflix in October. Dropping by the Deadline studio with co-star Gael Garc\u00eda Bernal, star Maggie Gyllenhaal explained that the project had gripped her from the get-go. \u201cEvery once in a while,\u201d she said, \u201cthere\u2019s a script you read where you\u2019re like, \u2018I have to do this movie.\u2019 I read it, I finished it\u2014the ending is particularly interesting in this movie\u2014and I closed it, and I was like, \u2018Yes, please. How do I sign up for it?\u2019 I just felt I knew immediately it was the next thing I was supposed to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gyllenhaal plays Lisa Spinelli, who is, as the title suggests, a kindergarten teacher. \u201cShe\u2019s also an artist, a poet, [but] nobody is seeing her at all. Nobody\u2019s hearing her work, nobody cares about it \u2026 and we meet her at the moment where she\u2019s waking up to the fact that she\u2019s really not satisfied with what her life is, and she goes down a really problematic and questionable path to try to feed herself, which is basically that she hears a child saying what she thinks are poems and she takes those poems and gets kind of obsessed with [the boy].\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked to define the film by genre, Gyllenhaal said, \u201cI think it\u2019s something new. It\u2019s a thriller in a way. It\u2019s a psychological thriller. You\u2019re inside the mind of this woman. It\u2019s terrifying. Not because a monster\u2019s going to jump out at you, or there\u2019s blood everywhere. There\u2019s not. It\u2019s terrifying because you\u2019re watching the consequences of starving a woman\u2019s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
