‘We Need To Talk About Cosby’ Director W. Kamau Bell On Docuseries’ Dilemma – Sundance Studio:

“It’s not like this is a project I’ve been thinking about for a long time, this is a subject I’ve been thinking about for a long time,” says We Need To Talk About Cosby director W. Kamau Bell of the former sex offender once known as America’s Dad and his complicated legacy.

“For me, whether it exists as a four-episode docuseries, I’m thinking about it all the time, it’s a recurring thing,” the United Shades of America host adds.

With We Need To Talk About Cosby premiering today at the virtual Sundance Film Festival and on Showtime on January 30, Bell was speaking in Deadline’s Sundance Studio – – check out our conversation in the video above.

In the docuseries, Bell speaks with a sprawling array of journalists, actors, cultural commentators, and comedians. The project also features several survivors of Cosby’s alleged sexual assaults over the years telling their stories and giving their perspectives on the man

And of course, as We Need To Talk About Cosby displays, the sordid tale and conversation continues.

Based on what many have termed a technicality, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in June 2021 vacated Cosby’s 2018 conviction for the 2004 rape of Andrea Constand, and the now 84-year-old actor walked free. Currently facing an effort by prosecutors to have the U.S. Supreme Court take up the matter and battling a number of civil suits, Cosby has been accused by more than 60 women of rape, drug-facilitated sexual assault, sexual battery and other misconduct, with some of the alleged crimes dating back nearly 60 years.

We Need to Talk About Cosby is a Boardwalk Pictures Production in association with WKB Industries for Showtime. The series is EP’d by Bell, Andrew Fried, Katie A. King, Dane Lillegard, Jordan Wynn and Sarina Roma. King also serves as showrunner for the docuseries and Geraldine Porras is co-executive producer.
